Tories take polling lead in 'Blue Wall' seats

Boost for Tories as they take polling lead in ‘Blue Wall’ seats for first time since Rishi Sunak became PM – but they still trail far behind Labour overall

  • Redfield & Wilton polls shows Tories one point ahead of Labour in southern seats

The Tories have been handed a boost after a new poll showed the party had taken a lead in ‘Blue Wall’ seats for the first time since Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister.

A Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey showed the Conservatives had moved one point ahead of Labour among voters in 42 key constituencies.

The term Blue Wall is used to refer to affluent, southern seats where the Tories have traditionally been dominant but seen their support slipping in recent years.

In the new poll, the Tories were backed by 34 per cent of voters in those areas, ahead of Labour on 33 per cent and Liberal Democrats on 22 per cent.

This is the first time Redfield & Wilton had found the Conservatives leading across 42 Blue Wall seats – all won by the Tories at the 2019 general election – since October.

But a separate poll showed the tough task facing Mr Sunak and his party across the whole of Britain, with the Tories trailing Labour by 17 points in the latest Datapoll survey.
