Thousands brave the cold for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Thousands of sightseers suffered through bone-chilling conditions to see Snoopy and the rest of the gang take flight in the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

It was blustery along the parade route but this year’s 26 balloons were soaring high in the air for the time-honored tradition.

Temperatures will peak at about 28 degrees during the day but 17 to 22 mph winds will make it feel closer to the single digits.

Early bird Tommy Onolfo arrived at the parade route at 5:30 a.m. — dressed in a full turkey costume to help stay warm.

“I’m excited for everything — the balloons, the excitement, the hype,” the 36-year-old said. “This is my fifth year, I know the drill. I got here at 5:30 am. I’m not worried about the wind. These guys know what to do.”

The biting cold also couldn’t keep Kevin Canwell, 59, away. He’s attended 25 parades since the festivities began in 1924.

“It was great weather last year. This year, not as much,” he said. “It’s minute by minute. In all the years I’ve been coming, they’ve never pulled the balloons. So, we’ll see. I’m looking forward to it, though — Ronald McDonald is one of my favorites.”

City officials said they would be closely monitoring the winds and gusts.

“Decision has been made: parade balloons will fly!” tweeted Eric Phillips, a spokesman for Mayor de Blasio. “We’ll be monitoring wind conditions closely, and adjust their height if necessary. But they will be in the air.”

The parade will snake down Central Park West, across West 59th Street, then onto Sixth Avenue to continue straight down to its final stop in front of Macy’s in Herald Square.
