Third of Britons lie about their music tastes because they’re ‘ashamed’, with Justin Bieber, McFly and S Club 7 among nation’s guilty music pleasures

Music fans have revealed their guilty music secrets – with Justin Bieber the artist that most people lie about liking.

In a poll of 2,000 people in Britain, a third of those quizzed admitted they fibbed about the kind of music they listened to because they were ‘ashamed’ of being fans.

Top of the charts of cheesy songs people try to keep secret from friends and family is Baby, by Bieber, right. 

Also in the Top Ten are McFly with Five Colours In Her Hair from 2004 and S Club 7’s 2000 hit Reach.

The Spice Girls with Wannabe, Peter Andre with Mysterious Girl and Ant and Dec – as 1990s pop act PJ & Duncan with Let’s Get Ready To Rhumble – are also in the chart, according to the survey carried out by Sony.

Andre, now 47, said: ‘Mysterious Girl has a special place in my heart, and it’s lovely to hear that people are still enjoying it 25 years on.

‘My guilty pleasures are some of my favourite songs. They’re the ones that we really connect with, or maybe grew up with. Perhaps we can all now come clean about the songs we love.’
