Stone-throwing youths who set up road blocks to target delivery trucks have left a delivery driver in hospital and off work for three weeks.

The gang in Harpurhey, Greater Manchester, caused £2,000 worth of damage to the lorry – and the company’s boss said they had made parts of the city a ‘no-go zone’.

Mark Livsey, who runs Parcel Partner, said he now turns down jobs in Harpurhey and Moston because he fears for the safety of his staff.

He revealed footage of the shocking attack carried out in September, and said the gangs – aged as young as 13 – even set up daylight road blocks to target deliveries.

Mr Livsey said: ‘That area of Moston and Harpurhey, it’s just a joke. It’s not acceptable and we get it all the time. We try and request no deliveries around there now. It’s that bad.

‘Drivers get attacked there all the time. They will follow them. Depending how big the driver is, they will stop them in the road and then say ‘oh, you’re delivering to number 13’.

‘Then they’re round the back trying to get into the van. They come equipped, with bolt cutters and everything. They are only young, 13 to 16 years old, they’re not grown men.’

In the video from September, Mr Livsey’s drivers were shown quickly reversing from the scene as a group of four or five teens threw bricks and rocks at the truck.

Mr Livsey said: ‘A group of lads were trying to get into the back of the truck. They were scared away but then the drivers were attacked.

‘They were throwing rocks, metal rods, whatever they could get their hands on.’

It comes after a new top police officer for the area vowed to crack down on yobs terrorising the streets.

Residents report teenage gangs routinely throwing stones and eggs at passing cars, shoplifting and in some cases carrying out terrifying street muggings.

Earlier this month, footage emerged of a JustEat driver appearing to be mugged in Moston as he delivered a KFC meal.

Taxi drivers have also told how they dread going to parts of the area because their cars are coming under a barrage of stones and eggs, while residents told how they are scared to go out after dark.

Chief Inspector Denise Pye, recently appointed to Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester team, said: ‘Our job is to ensure there are no no-go zones.

‘We are going to make sure it is a safe place to live and work. We want to help but we need the community’s help too.’

Councillor Nigel Murphy, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: ‘We are working with residents and police to help identify those responsible for recent crimes so appropriate action can be taken.

‘We would encourage anyone with information to get in touch with the police or our anti-social behaviour team.’

Chief Inspector Pye added: ‘The recent attacks on business owners and members of the community are very concerning.

‘Everyone should be able to do their job without fear and we will not tolerate acts of violence or antisocial behaviour in our community.

‘We take all crimes seriously, allocating officers and staff in line with the threat, harm and risk that is presented, while ensuring that we are safeguarding our most vulnerable members of society.

‘Unfortunately we have less officers than we used to and more crime to investigate and this means that we have to be tighter on where we prioritise our reduced resources.

‘A decision was made to discontinue the investigation into this incident, however due to the increase in antisocial behaviour and violence against members of the public in this area we will be re-opening the case, working with Manchester City Council and partners to identify the offenders in this footage.’
