Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been freed after 50 days in jail for organising anti-Kremlin protests.

Authorities have turned up the heat on Vladimir Putin’s chief critic since the president’s ratings tumbled over unpopular pension reforms.

Mr Navalny, 42, served back-to-back sentences for his opposition to plans to raise the eligibility age for state pensions, which is now law.

Outside a detention centre in Moscow yesterday, he said: ‘I think over the 50 days which I spent here, we saw a lot of evidence this regime is in complete decline.’
