The Kremlin said Friday that it hoped the White House would not release confidential details of phone calls between President Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Asked if Moscow is concerned that transcripts of Trump’s calls with Putin might be published, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “we would like to hope that it wouldn’t come to that in our relations, which are already troubled by a lot of problems.”
Peskov made the comment in response to questions about the White House’s release of a summary of Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that sparked a political firestorm.
The rough transcript of the call released by the White House on Wednesday shows that Trump urged Ukraine to “look into” his Democratic political rival Joe Biden.
The revelation sparked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to launch an impeachment inquiry.
The Russian spokesman emphasized that the publication of the Trump-Zelenskiy call is a domestic U.S. issue, but added that it was “quite unusual” to release a confidential call between leaders.
“The materials related to conversations between heads of states are usually classified according to normal international practice,” he said.
