Royal pregnancy rules Meghan and Harry have to follow – but have already broken

Kensington Palace announced this morning that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first child – just days after Meghan’s large coat sparked rumours at Princess Eugenie’s wedding.

Like his mum Diana, Prince Harry has always been a natural with kids and it seems his wife Meghan is exactly the same.

So news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first child has been greeted with happiness, getting royal fans extremely excited.

As you’d expect, there are lots of royal rules and protocol they’ll have to follow now they’ve decided to start a family, as with all aspects of their lives.

And it’s not just parenthood which comes with royal traditions – the pregnancy has them, too.

Prince William and Kate Middleton had to follow the rules (mostly) and now it’s Harry and Meghan’s turn.

Meghan probably won’t have a baby shower

It’s a popular tradition in the UK and the US for friends and family of the expectant mum to thrown them a baby shower, with fun games and presents.

But ABC News’ expert Victoria Arbiter said baby showers weren’t common in the royal family.

She said: "They are clearly very wealthy, and a lavish baby shower would be seen as highly inappropriate.

"There’s nothing they can’t go out and buy themselves."

However there are reports that Kate Middleton’s sister Pippa threw her a baby shower when she was pregnant with George.

Overseas travel is limited

All pregnant women are advised to avoid flying at the end of their pregnancy, and many airlines won’t actually let them.

But for the royals, this is much more strict and travel throughout the entire pregnancy is frowned upon.

This probably wasn’t a huge set-back for Kate and other pregnant women before her, but almost all of Meghan’s family and friends live in America or Canada.

According to the Sun , pregnant royals are advised to keep travelling abroad to a minimum for safety reasons.

We didn’t see Kate made as many overseas visits during when she was expecting, although she did go on a royal tour of Sweden and Norway when she was caring Prince Louis.

Not one to follow the rules, Meghan and Harry actually announced their pregnancy while they were on the other side of the world.

The happy news came from Kensington Palace hours after the Duke and Duchess touched down in Sydney to start their tour of Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific islands.

Perhaps this is a sign they will also flout the travel ban for the rest of Meghan’s pregnancy?

The sex will be a top guarded secret

The gender of a royal baby isn’t revealed until he or she makes their big arrival.

Kate and Wills haven’t known for any of their three children, even though people believed they dropped several hints during the pregnany.

A source told E! News : "William and Kate don’t know the sex of the baby, so they’re rather looking forward to finding out.

"It’s very difficult to be totally prepared when you don’t know if it’s going to be a boy or a girl."

A HUGE maternity team – who have to give up booze

When Kate gave birth she had a massive team on hand to make sure everything went smoothly.

Her dream team comprised of two obstetricians, three midwives, three anesthesiologists, four surgical staff members, two special care staffers, four pediatricians, one lab technician for blood tests, and three or four managers.

The team met once a month to discuss the pregnancy at every different stage.

And they had to give up a lot. They were on call for three months before her due date – and they weren’t allowed to drink during this period.

The birth announcement

When Baby Sussex does finally arrive, there will be no messaging family on WhatsApp or posting on Facebook to tell people about the new member of the family.

As with Prince William and Kate Middleton, the announcement is likely to be displayed on an easel outside Buckingham Palace.

Historically, the announcement was hand-written by the doctor immediately after birth and sent in a car to the palace to let the public know the baby’s gender.

Nowadays, the easel is joined by an announcement on social media. Kensington Palace announced the news of all three of Kate and William’ children’s births on their Twitter account.

If that’s not enough, a town crier also typically stands outside the hospital ringing a bell and bellowing the news to the waiting media and members of the public.
