Residents have been told to keep their doors locked and their windows shut by police after a deadly 9ft boa constrictor managed to slither its way to freedom out of an air vent.

A hunt is underway to find Draco the snake, as members of the public were warned not to approach the animal as it tries to find somewhere warm.

The non-venomous creature, named after Harry Potter’s schoolboy rival Draco Malfoy, escaped from its home in Boston, Lincolnshire, on Wednesday night and police have been on the lookout since.

The owner, known only as John, said: ‘We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw Draco wasn’t there.

‘Snakes are clever animals and it was very intelligent to escape the way he did. We thought he couldn’t get out that way.

‘My wife and I looked everywhere and turned the house upside down but we couldn’t find it anywhere.’ 

Boa constrictors are not venomous but they attack their prey with their teeth before constricting it to death and swallowing it whole.

Typically the animal’s prey tends to be small but they have been known to kill sheep and pigs. There are fears the animal could attack a child.

The animal is believed to have slithered out of its home on Union Street in Boston, Lincolnshire

‘I’ve told the police that if it is going to go for someone then they should take it out.’

In a statement, police have urged locals to keep their windows and doors shut and block external vents like tumble dryers or extractor fans in a bid to keep them safe.

They added: ‘The missing snake is approx 8 ft and will look to find somewhere warm. This could be a garden shed, car bonnet, loft etc. Although the snake can curl up in a small place and can last for sometime without food.’ 

‘The Boa constrictor is not venomous, but should not be approached. It is likely to find somewhere warm, so could be in an area such as a garden shed.

‘It has white on its tail, with grey, black and brown spots.

‘Officers are currently searching for the reptile.

‘If anyone sees what they think is a snake in the area, call 999 quoting Incident 361 of November 28.’
