The youths tried to grab his bike and one of them then punched him in the face, leaving Mr Cook needing hospital treatment.

A few weeks later he was punched in the face by a pensioner in a pub after a Brexit debate became heated.

He was also verbally abused by a passerby as he walked through the  streets – again after his attacker noticed the T-shirt.

Mr Cook, of Gillingham, Kent said: ‘The teenagers at the train station tried to pull my bicycle down the stairs and started spitting at me.

‘There was about seven of them and one of them punched me across the face once.

‘They were very aggressive – it wasn’t nice.’

Mr Cook says he wears the T-shirt two or three times a week, usually when he is going to protest over Brexit.

He thought of the phrase while in the shower and says he will continue to wear the white top, which has the words written in blue and red.

The pensioner at the pub did not leave him with any injuries, though Mr Cook said he was shocked to be assaulted during their discussion.

Last Monday he was the victim of a barrage of abuse from a stranger after leaving a supermarket while dressed in the top.

The man told Mr Cook to ‘cross the Channel’ if he did not like the outcome of the referendum.

Mr Cook, 60, refused to give up wearing the t-shirt despite it attracting negative attention

Mr Cook said: ‘I’d just come out of Aldi and a guy who must have seen me in there started going off at me outside.

‘He was about 30 yards away and just started shouting ‘you f****** c***, you f****** this and that’ for no reason.

‘An elderly couple thought he was shouting at them but I said ‘it’s me he wants’.

‘A lot people are experiencing this in the area.

‘I think there’s an awful lot of regret about Brexit, and people think they haven’t got what they voted for.’

British Transport Police said it is still investigating the train station attack on Mr Cook.
