Rare doll owned by the Queen up for auction – but it has a hefty price tag

Ever wondered what kind of toys the Queen used to play with as a youngster?

Well, apparently she was a big fan of a rather eerie looking doll that’s going up for auction in London next month.

Whatever the Queen named the doll isn’t clear, but it features a turquoise blue coat, curly blonde hair and blue eyes.

Fashion and antiques auctioneer Kerry Taylor said that the rag-doll belonged to Her Majesty when she was a princess rather than a Queen back in the 1930s.

"She would have been around nine or 10 years old probably when she got this doll," she said.

The toy is a Chad Valley doll and has glass eyes, a swivel head, a velvet body and jointed limbs.

Kerry reckons it was "well loved" by young Elizabeth.

"You can see the little nose has been rubbed. It’s been heavily played with," she said.

Kerry has estimated its value as £800-£1,200, but said it would not surprise her if the doll went for more.

"It’s very rare that anything belonging to Her Majesty ever comes on the market," she added.

As far as the auctioneer is aware, this is the first time a royal doll has come to market.

The doll came to Kerry Taylor Auctions from the family of Clara Knight, who was a royal nanny to Princess Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret.

It’s not the only royal item that’s set to be up for grabs.

Three floral dresses and other items worn by Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret will be available to bid on.

There will also be a beautiful silk jersey dress worn by Princess Diana going up for auction.

"I think it’s one of the most beautiful Diana dresses," Kerry said.

"It has this beautiful bodice, all hand-embroidered with rhinestones and beads.

"And it was specially ordered by Elizabeth Emanuel and she only made the one, specifically for the Princess. So it’s a real one-off. It’s spectacular."

The estimated value of the dress, which was purchased from a second-hand dress shop in Hereford in 1994, is a whopping £60,000-£100,000.

The Passion for Fashion auction is at Kerry Taylor Auctions in London on December 10.
