One of the vehicles was driven into an entrance at the store in James Street while the other a White VW Golf was used as a getaway car.

A store insider told MailOnline: ‘We are hearing that it could be the biggest ever robbery at Selfridges and hundreds of thousands of goods taken.

‘The raiders knew what they were looking for and went straight to the store room where the expensive handbags and other items are kept.

‘Staff have been told not to talk about the raid but it’s the gossip of the store.’

The robbery unfolded at the world-famous department store on Oxford Street this morning

Detectives investigating the raid have been at the scene gathering evidence and looking for any CCTV that might have captured the VW Golf making its getaway.

It was last seen turning into Wigmore Street after the raid.

DC Tom Aylward from Westminster CID said: ‘This raid was targeted and lasted a matter of minutes.

‘My team are busy collecting witness accounts and recovering vital CCTV footage of the burglary at the store and of the suspects leaving the scene.

‘Thankfully nobody was injured. I’d like to appeal for those who may have been in the area at the time and saw the individuals involved, either at the scene or fleeing, to get in touch with police and send us any images and footage that they may have.

‘All the suspects were males – at this time we are still trying to establish a full description.’

A spokesman for Selfridges declined to comment on the raid.
