Pret A Manger apologises to customers after selling vegetarian breakfast pots with sausages inside at London store

  • Pork sausages were at the bottom of the pot and covered up with beans
  • Life-long vegetarian returned the breakfast only to be given the same again
  • Food chain has apologised and said the staff involved will be ‘re-trained’

Sandwich shop chain Pret A Manger has come under fire again today after a vegetarian customer found pork sausages in her veggie breakfast pot.

Pret has apologised for the ‘break down in procedure’ which saw an office worker from London tucking into a breakfast which she thought was vegetarian.

The life-long vegetarian, who asked not to be named, returned the pot to the store where staff apologised and issued her with a replacement.

However, when she returned to her office the 25-year-old discovered that the new pot also contained the pork sausages.

Pret has said the whole batch of the veggie breakfast pots could have been affected and has said it has ‘re-trained’ the staff involved.

Speaking to The Sun, the woman said: ‘The first time it happened I thought it could just be a fluke but when it happened again I was appalled.

A spokeswoman from Pret said they were sorry for the experience had by the customer at the Victoria, London branch

‘This is a big company, they should have proper checking processes.

‘I am a life-long veggie, who has never knowingly eaten meat but imagine if I could not eat meat or pork on religious grounds.’

A spokeswoman from Pret said: ‘We are very sorry for our customer’s experience, and we would like to invite her to get back in touch so we can give her the apology she deserves.’

The woman added that the sausages had been at the bottom of the veggie pot and had been covered by beans hence why she didn’t immediately notice them.

When she returned to the shop in Victoria, London, a Pret worker apologised and got her a new breakfast from the shelf. Despite the effort from the staff member, this pot also contained sausages.

She added: ‘It was obviously the whole batch that was wrong – this is a big branch in central London and you wonder just how many people have been affected.’

The woman complained to Pret’s head office and they launched an investigation following the incident on August 31.

In a response to the customer the company said: ‘The Safety Team has identified the members of the team who made this product that day.

‘All kitchen team members have been re-trained on the existing robust production standards, which are in place to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

‘Our products are always prepared separately, one batch at a time, and are labelled separately to reduce the risk of these being mixed up.

‘There was clearly a break-down in these procedures that day. Please rest assured that the general and kitchen managers will be keeping a very close eye on the production process following this incident.’

The latest blow for Pret comes after 15-year-old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse collapsed on board a flight in July 2016 and later died after eating an artichoke, olive and tapenade baguette she had bought at a Pret outlet in Heathrow Airport. She was allergic to sesame, which was not listed on ingredients but was in bread.

42-year-old Celia Marsh, from Melksham, Wiltshire, died last year after eating a super-veg rainbow flatbread which was supposed to be dairy free.
