Shocking video footage shows a cop getting sucker-punched and knocked to the ground during the latest night of destruction in troubled Portland, Oregon.
Footage taken by The Oregonian and shared by Portland Police Bureau shows a sergeant on a bike being blocked by a protester dressed all in black and thrusting a phone in his face Tuesday night.
“F–k you cops!” someone in the crowd screams as the officer moves the protester out of the way, with the pair exchanging angry words.
As the cop walks away — and a loudspeaker confirms it has been ruled an unlawful assembly — another member of the large group suddenly winds up and punches him in the face.
As the sergeant crumples to the ground, the attacker leaps on him, before other officers quickly rush in to stop the attack.
“In response to the violent conduct, some focused blows were used,” Portland police Sgt. Kevin Allen said of the struggle to detain the attacker. “Pepper spray was also deployed by an officer,” the force said.
The sergeant had “landed in a dangerous position, underneath the suspect and on his back.”
“This was a very dangerous situation,” the force said. “That’s when other officers moved in to stop the assault.”
Randy Gray, 36, was charged with assaulting a public safety officer, fourth-degree assault, harassment, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, police said. He was released from Multnomah County Detention Center by Wednesday, online records show.
The latest night of violence rocked Portland as protesters in most US cities instead celebrated the historic conviction of ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin for George Floyd’s murder.
Instead, police say at least 100 people took to Portland streets, starting fires, smashing windows and scrawling graffiti.
Police also arrested a suspect accused of smashing up a local coffee shop and spray painting the windows.
Kenneth Harold, 24, was charged with criminal mischief, and was in possession of a glass-breaking tool and cans of spray paint when he was taken into custody, police said.
