Police hunting for missing mother-of-five Sarah Wellgreen start new search opposite Bluewater Shopping Centre – the seventh one since she disappeared three weeks ago

Police searching for missing mother-of-five Sarah Wellgreen have begun searching woodland opposite one of Europe’s largest shopping malls – exactly three weeks after she vanished.

Ms Wellgreen, 46, was last seen in the Bazes Shaw area of New Ash Green, Kent, on the evening of October 9.

Dozens of police officers are searching an area near the vast Bluewater Shopping Centre at Greenhithe, near Dartford, Kent as part of the investigation.

Nine police vans are parked on streets opposite an area of woodland off Mounts Road which is currently being searched.

Uniformed officers with rakes are trawling the area which has been cordoned off by police as the search for the mother-of-five intensifies into a new area.

It is made up of trees and also a footpath. It is being guarded by two officers, while many more work behind the large cordon.

Kent Police have confirmed they are searching there but say it is one of a number of locations they are looking at as part of the investigation.

Police are taking part in an extensive search operation for the missing mother-of-five

Resident Kirsty James, who lives near where the search is taking place, said it was disturbing to see officers in the area looking for Sarah.

The 51-year-old said: ‘It’s a case I’ve been following in the news quite a lot. Three weeks is a very long time and I imagine people are fearing the worst now.

‘I’ve never seen so many police officers in one area before. It looks like a very thorough search and something serious.

The area is close to where schoolgirl Claire Tiltman was murdered in January 1993.

16-year-old Claire was stabbed in an alley off London Road, Greenhithe – less than a mile from where police are now searching undergrowth – and died in the arms of a paramedic on the pavement.

Colin Ash-Smith, 46, was finally jailed for life for her murder in December 2014.

The disappearance of the mother-of-five has sparked a huge search operation by police who spent the weekend looking in Dartford, Kent , the nearby villages of Hartley and Longfield and woodland near Fawkham.

A number of extensive searches have already been undertaken in the 46-year-old’s home in New Ash Green and the surrounding woodland in parts of Kent.

On Sunday detectives were examining two knives and some women’s clothing found by volunteers in New Ash Green.

More than 400 volunteers are thought to have joined the multiple searches over the weekend to find Sarah Wellgreen.
