Police find body in lake as they search for missing student, 19, who vanished after a night out at campus bar

  • Body has been discovered in a lake at the Whiteknights campus at the university 
  • No formal identification has been made but the teenager’s family has been informed

Police searching for a missing student who vanished after a night out at a campus bar have found a body in a lake.

Daniel Williams, 19, was last seen at around midnight in a student union bar on Whiteknights campus at the University of Reading. 

A body was discovered today in a lake at the university.

Thames Valley Police said Mr Williams’ family has been informed but highlighted that no formal identification has yet taken place.  

Superintendent Stan Gilmour, Local Policing Area Commander for Reading, said: ‘Tragically officers searching for Daniel have located a body. While the identity of the person who died is yet to be established, we have informed Daniel’s family and are providing support to them.

‘Please could I make an appeal to respect the privacy of Daniel’s family at what must be a deeply difficult time for them.’

The death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not believed to be suspicious.

Thames Valley Police Officers searched the lake and its banks following the dissapearance of Mr Williams

Last week search and rescue teams were deployed to find Mr Williams after he went missing during the early hours of Thursday 31 January.  

The second-year Computer Science student was reported missing after he failed to return to his student accommodation. 

After the teenager was reported missing, investigating officer Sergeant Bradley Pitt said: ‘We are appealing for anyone with information about Daniel’s whereabouts to get in contact with police as we are extremely concerned for his welfare.

Police said they were ‘extremely concerned’ for his welfare and that his disappearance was ‘out of character’

‘It is out of character for Daniel to be missing so please report any possible sightings of him to officers as soon as possible.’

The student has some family connections in Sutton, Surrey.

Mr Williams is described as 6ft tall, slim build, with short light brown hair and blue eyes.

He was wearing black or blue jeans, a black hooded top and black shoes.

Mr Williams was also wearing a black t-shirt underneath with a distinctive white motif on the front.
