A delivery driver has been jailed for two years after he took a selfie while spitting onto a customer’s pizza in Turkey.

Named only as Burak S., he was 18-years-old when the incident took place in 2017 in the central Anatolian city of Eskisehir.

Despite being captured on CCTV at the customer’s apartment block, Burak maintained his innocence for the apparently unmotivated act. ‘I didn’t spit on the pizza,’ he told the court on Tuesday. ‘I demand my acquittal.’

But the court in Eskisehir convicted him on charges of ‘damaging property’ and ‘poisoning food and endangering people’s health,’ Anadolu said.

Despite being captured on CCTV at the customer’s apartment block, Burak S. maintained his innocence for the apparently unmotivated act. ‘I didn’t spit on the pizza,’ he told the court on Tuesday. ‘I demand my acquittal.’

He was sentenced to two years and six months.

The case came to light after the owner of the apartment building saw the incident while watching the security footage and alerted the pizza customer, prompting the criminal complaint.

CCTV footage showed Burak opening up a pizza box outside customer Huseyin Alyuz’s home and leaning over it as he filmed himself on his phone.

Burak then walked up to Alyuz’s fifth-floor flat to deliver the meal.

The case came to light after the owner of the apartment building saw the incident while watching the security footage and alerted the pizza customer, prompting the criminal complaint

Mr Alyuz’s nephew, Cagatay Ehe, saw the CCTV footage and told his uncle who complained to the police and the pizza company.

Burak S. previously claimed he was only checking the pizza for damage but was sacked after he was charged.

The court proceedings had been delayed because forensic experts had to assess the risk of disease from Burak’s spitting on the pizza.
