Shenley was a psychiatric hospital designed for 2,000 patients. King George V and Queen Mary officially opened the Hospital at the end of May 1934 although the first phase of the build was completed in 1932.

During the Second World War some of the facility was used as a military hospital.

The tower was converted in 2006 into six apartments and fitted with a lift, making the journey to the penthouse far more appealing than climbing up 10 flights of stairs.

Before the site was demolished the hospital appeared in one of Ray Winstone’s debut films ‘Scum’ in 1979.

The then fresh-faced actor played the role of Carlin, who was incarcerated after taking the rap for his brother for stealing scrap metal.
