A pedestrian has died after he was hit by a car which was being followed by police.
The 54-year-old was outside the County Hotel in Newcastle at midnight when a car careered off the road and ploughed into him and another pedestrian before smashing into the building.
Northumbria Police said the vehicle had been involved in a chase, but officers abandoned the pursuit shortly before the collision.
Five people were taken to hospital and one man died following the crash at midnight on Sunday
The victim has not been formally named, but relatives have been informed and are being supported by family liaison officers.
Five people were injured and taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), including three who suffered serious injuries.

Northumbria Police said officers received a report of two abandoned vehicles with damaged windscreens in the Walker area of Newcastle at 10pm on Sunday.
Detectives identified a VW Passat which may have been involved and it was then discovered at midnight driving in the Walker area.
Northumbria Police said the vehicle had been involved in a chase, but officers had abandoned the pursuit shortly before the collision
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: ‘Officers signalled for it to stop, and a short pursuit began, but the Passat drove off and officers lost sight of the vehicle.
‘A short time later officers received a report that the vehicle in question had collided with two pedestrians at the County Hotel pub on Walker Road.
‘At the time of the collision officers were not in pursuit of the vehicle.’
The police spokesman added: ‘Our thoughts remain with his family at this difficult time and specialist officers are supporting them as the investigation continues.
‘Three occupants of the vehicle were also taken to hospital, one of whom is described as suffering from serious injuries.’

An IOPC spokesperson said an independent investigation was now underway.
A resident on nearby Burwood Road heard the ‘bang’ and saw the aftermath.
She said: ‘Everyone was screaming. The police and fire brigade were straight there. You couldn’t move for blue lights on Walker Road.’
