Paige Doherty's dad 'dies of broken heart' two years after teen daughter's brutal murder

Paige Doherty was stabbed and slashed with a knife 146 times by frenzied deli owner John Leathem after she went into his shop for a roll and to ask about a job in March 2016.

Her dad Jon Bothwell, 37, a boxer from Glasgow, has now passed away two years on from the tragedy, the family confirmed to the Daily Record.

His mum Roseanne Bothwell, 71, said: “He was heartbroken. Paige loved Jon out her mind too. He never got over it. He died of a broken heart. He was never the same after she died.

“He said he used to have nightmares where he’d see her at the bottom of his bed and she wanted him to go with her. We’ll never get over Paige’s death and Jon took it the worst. He died in the bedroom but they brought him back.

“The paramedics then took him to hospital. He was in a coma. He died there on Saturday.”

Leathem claims that when Paige asked for a job at his deli, she threatened to accuse him of touching her.

He then flew into a rage and stabbed her 61 times, with 43 to her head and neck.

She suffered 85 further cuts to the rest of her body while defending herself.

CCTV showed Leathem pulling down his shop's shutters and carrying Paige's body, wrapped in bin bags and with a foot poking out, to his car. He put her in his garden shed.

The next day, Leathem took his wife and child on a day out.

A day later, he moved the body to nearby woodland and returned to work at the deli, in Clydebank, near Glasgow.

The 4ft 8ins hairdresser's body was found later that day.

Leathem, of Clydebank, admitted murder and was jailed for 27 years.

Glasgow high court heard how the killing had affected Paige's mum Pamela Munro in a victim impact statement.

Prosecutor Iain McSporran said: "She describes sleeplessness and nightmares, waking to hear her daughter's screams and the awful realisation that she was not there to help her."
