The number of coronavirus in New York City jumped to 7,530 Saturday, according to figures released by City Hall.
That was a leap of 1,847 cases overnight, even as the majority of the city was on near lockdown. The increase is mainly due to a significant increase in testing. State figures show 19,463 tests have been done in the city, including 5,077 Friday.
At least 45 people have died in the five boroughs from the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. On Friday alone, 12 people died between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., or more than one per hour.
The city said early Saturday that Queens is the hardest hit, with 2,077 cases. There are 1,791 cases in Manhattan, 2,275 in Brooklyn, 1,005 in the Bronx and 375 in Staten Island.
There were 1,160 people hospitalized from Covid-19 as of 5 p.m. Friday, including 260 in intensive care.
The city is now the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S., with 38 percent of the total 19,931 confirmed cases and 16 percent of the nation’s 275 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University’s virus tracker.
New York State has more than 10,000 cases, accounting for more than half of the total, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.
