The 12 per cent total surprised analysts who scrutinised 5,033 men aged 20 to 74, as it was two per cent higher than previously thought.
The 604 who said they visited hookers were found to average 33 sexual partners, compared with 13 for the 4,429 who did not.
Researcher Dr Marilena Locatelli said: “There are more managers, professionals and skilled workers paying for sex.
“This is not the case for elementary occupations.
"There are also higher numbers of visits to prostitutes by men who say they are religious.”
The same applied to men travelling abroad, Londoners and middle- income earners paid from £30,000 to £50,000.
Dr Locatelli, of Turin University, Italy, added: “Perhaps lower-paid men can’t afford sex with prostitutes and the rich have reputations to lose.”
