NYPD warns cops to watch out for concrete-filled tennis balls during protests

The NYPD are being pelted with concrete-filled tennis balls during George Floyd protests, the NYPD warned its members Sunday.

The two unidentified officers, who were following protestors Thursday after a demonstration in Union Square, were at the corner of Ninth Avenue and West 25th Street when they were pummeled with the rock-hard balls, according to an advisory obtained by The Post.

“One of the two officers was hospitalized with a contusion (bruise) to left shoulder,” it said. “Please be cognizant of all objects in persons’ hands or lying on the ground during these protests.”

“Stay safe, stay protected, and covered.”

At last one concrete-filled tennis ball has been recovered, a police source said.

Police said 292 cops have been hurt during demonstrations that have wracked the city since the May 25 death of Floyd while being pinned down by Minneapolis police.

Cops have also been the targets of attempted Molotov cocktail attacks.

In one case, a Princeton-educated attorney was among two lawyers charged with hurling the incendiary device at an empty NYPD squad car outside the 88th Precinct stationhouse in Fort Greene. In another, an upstate woman was charged with throwing a Molotov cocktail at four police officers inside a car on Eastern Parkway, but it did not ignite.

“During these violent times cops can’t relax for a minute because they are sitting ducks out there,” one Manhattan cop told The Post.

Records show that while cops have been targets of violence, watchdog groups say police use-of-force complaints are also up since the protests erupted.
