Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that New York City is getting “dangerously close” to a second coronavirus wave as the infection rate across the Big Apple is spiking.
“Unfortunately, we’re seeing a real growth in the positivity rate,” de Blasio said during a City Hall press briefing, adding, “We can stop a second wave if we act immediately — we have one last chance.”
The Big Apple’s citywide positivity rate now exceeds 2 percent, the mayor said.
“We’re seeing household transmission. We’re seeing community spread. We’re seeing things we haven’t seen in a long time,” said Hizzoner.
The warning comes after thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets over the weekend in celebration after Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election with hardly any social distancing.
With the holidays just around the corner, de Blasio, along with the city’s health commissioner Dave Chokshi, urged New Yorkers to not travel.
“The key problem here is indoors and not wearing masks,” de Blasio said. “If people avoid indoor gatherings and wear a mask, that’s going to be a key to turning this around.”
