Just two days after a criminal complaint was filed against a police officer in North Carolina, he was found dead.
On Sunday, Fayetteville Police Department’s Wade Lane Lee Jr. was found dead in the median of Interstate 95, according to a statement from the FPD, which was obtained by local news outlets ABC11, WRAL and the Fayetteville Observer.
Lee Jr., who was on the force since August 2009, was facing criminal charges involving a juvenile after police received a complaint on Friday afternoon.

His death is currently being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
On Tuesday, SBI Deputy Director Gerald Thomas released a statement, confirming, “Officer Lee’s death has been determined to have been caused by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
A spokesperson for the SBI did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Youth Services Unit launched a criminal investigation while the Internal Affairs Unit started an internal investigation, according to the police department’s statement.
Officials obtained warrants for the arrest of Lee Jr. following the investigations.
It is not known what charges Lee Jr. faced. The warrants have been withdrawn following his death.
