New Yorkers make more illegal wagers than residents of any other state — but they’re better bettors because they’re not as compulsive about gambling.
The Empire State ranked No. 1 for illegal gambling operations in a study by the personal finance site Wallethub.
With one gambling arrest per capita, the state was 12th for people cuffed over illicit gambling operations.
But New Yorkers know where to draw the line, the study shows.
Only four states have fewer “gambling disorders: Connecticut, Michigan, Kentucky and Florida.
Surprising no one, the casino capital, Las Vegas, took the prize for the most gambling-addicted state. Utah was last on the Wallethub list.
The April study measured 20 factors to determine the rankings, including casinos per capita, lottery sales per capita, Google searches for “gambling” and the presence of gambling addiction treatment centers.
Some forms of gambling are legal in New York, including horse race bets placed on this weekend’s Kentucky Derby.
New York has a long history with racing. It became home to the first-ever horse-racing track in the US in 1665 when Newmarket Course was built in the former Hempstead Plains section of Long Island.
