‘God only knows what I’d be without you’: Music shop worker plays his PIANO in the middle of the street as he surprises his girlfriend with a singing proposal (and she says ‘YES!’)

  • Shaun Mackinder, 33, from Hull, played God Only Knows by the Beach Boys
  • The music shop manager then popped the question to girlfriend Kira Astley, 28
  • Miss Astley said yes and described the moment as feeling like she was ‘in a film’

This is the heart-warming moment music shop worker carries out the perfect proposal with a little help from the Beach Boys in front of crowds of onlookers in the city centre.

After months planning how to pop the question, Shaun Mackinder, from Hull, finally asked his partner Kira Astley to marry him on Saturday afternoon with a special proposal in front of all their friends and family.

The 33-year-old, who works as a sales manager for Gough and Davy music shop, used a piano to perform God Only Knows for his 28-year-old fiancée.

The 33-year-old from Hull performed the heartwarming song and asked girlfriend Kira Astley, 28, to marry him

Miss Astley (pictured right) struggled to hold back her tears as her boyfriend suddenly got down on one knee after the rendition

However, Kira was none the wiser as to what her husband-to-be was actually planning to do.

She said: ‘I had no idea. I was so shocked. The night before he was ringing and saying he had some promotion at work and was trying to get me into town.

‘He rang my mum too and told me to get there for 11.30am so I did and I was expecting balloons because it was a celebration for the shop.

‘When I got there he had this piano out and he played that song and I thought ‘he must be up to something.’

After a three-minute pitch perfect performance, Shaun took the chance to ask Kira to be his wife, and although she was a little flustered it was a proposal she could not refuse.

She said: ‘I still can’t believe it. I was in shock, I was shaking and I felt like I was in a film.

‘I was crying and I couldn’t even get my words out but it was lovely.

Mr Mackinder invited his girlfriends’ friends and family down to his music shop by saying he was getting a special promotion

When Miss Astely arrived at her boyfriends shop there was a piano on the street and Mr Mackinder began performing to the crowd that had gathered

‘He told me afterwards that he had been practicing at work for over a year and a half. He’s always on his piano at his home but he has never played that song before and I just loved the words to it.’

Shaun, who lives with Kira in Hull, said the pair met after a night out in the Beverley Road area of the city five years ago.

He knew Kira’s twin before bumping into his future fiancée by chance and after locking eyes and going for a drink they have not looked back since.

Recalling his nerves on Saturday, Shaun said: ‘A lot of practice went into that and it took me a while to pluck up the courage and finally do it.

Miss Astley said her fiance had been practising the song for a year and a half before plucking up the courage to do the performance

‘During the actual performance I was thinking ‘I’ve got to get down on my knee after that and hopefully she’ll say yes.’

‘The bulk of the people there knew what was going on but Kira didn’t have a clue. There were some onlookers too who didn’t know but my mum and dad were there and so was Kira’s mum and my work colleagues.’

Kira, who works at Tesco in St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, said the amount of effort shown by Shaun only made her love him even more and she is now raring to tie the knot.

She said: ‘My mum has already bought some stuff for the wedding and I don’t really want a long term engagement.

‘What he did was amazing. It was so thoughtful and I was not expecting it at all.’
