More snow forecast to freeze the UK as temperatures set to plunge to -7C in three-day cold snap – will you be affected?

Commuters will face an "ice risk" in the coldest regions tomorrow morning as the mercury plummets tonight and the chill continues to Tuesday.

Heavy showers will lash the southeast, with bitter easterly winds making 9C highs feel colder across the nation.

Most regions saw a frosty start to their Sunday morning, with temperatures struggling to reach double figures.

The Met Office said conditions will clear up in the evening, making way for "widespread frost and freezing fog patches" as well as snow in Scotland and other northern parts of the UK.

One Lincolnshire resident reported a drop of nearly 20C in a fortnight, according to forecasters.

Forecasters also warned hail and thunder could batter Britain in the next few days.

Saturday recorded the first significant snowfall in October since 2012, according to Met Office archives.

Yesterday in County Durham and North Yorkshire, many woke to find their cars frozen and coated with snow as the cold snap hit today.

Snow fell in the West Midlands, north of England ans Scotland – though it mainly did not settle.

Met Office spokesman John West said the cold conditions could continue until Tuesday.

He said: "Saturday would have been the coldest October day of the decade if the UK saw a maximum temperature below 10.8C.

“Wintry showers in the East ease through Sunday, after wet snow fell on Saturday in the West Midlands, Peak District, Pennines, North York Moors and County Durham, with 5cm of settling snow on higher ground in Scotland.

“Saturday’s northerly wind swings round to easterly from Sunday until Tuesday, so remaining cold.

“Sunday night has -7C possible in Scotland where there is snow on hills, with -5C in the west of the UK and a local ice risk on Monday morning in the North-East.”

Yesterday, mercury struggled to rise above 8C in most regions, while snow showers swept across northeast England and Scotland.

But the freezing weather didn't deter one postman, who was snapped braving the elements in his shorts on his round in Durham.

Other photographs show people scraping snow from their cars.

The freeze comes after Britain basked in temperatures of 27C in some areas two weeks ago.

Posting on Twitter, the Met Office wrote: "Do you remember the warm weather two weeks ago? It seems like a distant memory today. Donna Nook in Lincolnshire has seen a drop of nearly 20C in a fortnight."
