A Canadian man who hit the lottery for $10.7 million in 2017 has mysteriously died in his native Ethiopia, a report said Monday.
Michael Gebru, 41, of Ontario, traveled to the African country a few weeks ago with the intention of visiting the area where he was raised, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Gebru was found dead on Saturday.
The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear and his family is pleading for answers.
Local police have not been forthcoming, Gebru’s family told the outlet, leading them to ask the Canadian Embassy in Ethiopia for help
“I don’t know exactly what happened,” said Gebru’s cousin, Sosuna Asefaw.
“Everyone knew who he was in Toronto and everyone knew back home, because it’s a big thing. He didn’t grow up with much.”
Gebru had won the lottery shortly after he was laid off from an assembly plant.
“I’ve always said that if I won the lottery, I’d help people in need,” he told CBC at the time.
Gebru’s cousin said he stayed true to his words.
“Going back home, he just wanted to do more for our country,” said Asefaw.
