Men kill Afghan woman’s dog as possible retaliation for teaching girls sports

A group of men gunned down a female coach’s Siberian husky in western Afghanistan — and the woman fears the killing was an act of retaliation because she teaches sports to girls, according to reports.

Sahba Barakzai, along with her family, was walking 7-month-old pup Aseman in the mountains last Friday — when a man “looking like a shepherd” approached and shot the dog.

“I shouted and ran towards Aseman and requested the man not to fire,” Sahba told Afghan news agency Khaama. “The gunman did not care, and shot four bullets in Aseman’s chest.”

Sobbing, Sahba took Aseman in her arms and began to run toward her family’s car.

Then the gunman, who was joined by several other men, fired another shot and demanded the family leave Aseman’s body with them — declaring that a woman could not own a dog, the outlet reported.

But Sahba and her family fear the men targeted her pup for a personal reason — because she teaches sports to girls, the BBC reported.

For the past 10 years, Sahba taught karate to children in Herat, Afghanistan’s third largest city.

She also launched a cycling club for teenage and young girls — a move which attracted strong opposition at first because it is still taboo for girls to ride bikes in the city.
