Measles has killed more than 1,200 people in Madagascar since September, according to a report on Sunday.
The island nation is facing its largest outbreak of the viral infection, with cases soaring beyond 115,000. Anti-vaxxers aren’t the driving force behind the uptick in cases, according to The Associated Press report.
The outbreak has mostly killed children under 15, according to the World Health Organization.
In the US, measles cases have been on the rise partly because of misinformed parents refusing to inoculate their children. Last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency in some parts of Brooklyn over a widespread outbreak in Williamsburg.
