Man, 23, charged after The Specials’ singer’s grandson, 21, knifed to death outside Coventry nightclub

Fidel Glasgow died after being stabbed outside a nightclub in Coventry, early on Saturday.

Atikou Diallo, 23, was arrested in City Arcade following the disorder outside Club M.

A second man aged 23 remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Diallo, of no fixed abode, was charged with violent disorder, grevious bodily harm and possession of cocaine and remanded in custody.

He will appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court tomorrow.

The Specials singer, Neville Staple, paid tribute to his grandson and confirmed the tragic news on Facebook.

He said: "We are truly devastated to announce the heartbreaking loss of my grandson Fidel (my daughter Melanie's son), who died today as a result of being attacked with a knife in the street.

"We want to thank the hospital staff & surgeons at UHCW University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, who battled all day to try & save him.

"My beautiful daughter Melanie & wife Christine Sugary, all the family and myself are still shocked by this tragedy.

"But would like to thank you all for the kindness & messages we have received. Thank you."

Neville performed on The Specials' ska hits, including A Message to You Rudy and Free Nelson Mandela, and now tours with his own band.

He confirmed he will still play at festival just a day after his grandson was killed.

Mr Staple's wife, Christine, told the BBC: "Our daughter Melanie said she wants us to still do it.

"Neville wants to dedicate the performance to Fidel and we want to do a little bit of highlighting while we are there and use our profile for something good by highlighting just what is going on at the moment with the young people and the things that are happening with knives, and in some cases guns, on our streets.

"Fidel was just so handsome, so sweet, such a charmer, anyone who met him would always say 'he's just so wonderful, what a lovely boy'.

Detective Inspector Harry Harrison, from the Homicide Unit, said: “Although an individual has been charged in connection with what happened on Saturday, we’re working round the clock to identify and apprehend Fidel’s killer.

“We are aware that numerous people who were at the club at the time could have vital information about what happened. I am appealing for anyone with information no matter how insignificant it may seem to contact us.

“Our thoughts remain with Fidel’s family who continue to be supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.”
