Strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia just weeks after a second quake killed 460 people

  • It was located 500km away from Lombok which has been devastated by quakes

Indonesia has been struck by another strong earthquake just weeks after over 400 people were killed from a quake.

The US Geological Survey said that a magnitude 6.5 offshore earthquake struck the Indonesian archipelago late on Friday.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 564.7 kilometres and was located 153 kilometres northeast of Raba.

The aggressive earthquake was followed by powerful aftershocks that destroyed thousands of homes and displaced about 350,000 people.  

Only a week earlier, 16 people were killed in an earthquake at the same location.

Friday’s earthquake was located around 500 kilometres from the island of Lombok. 

There was no tsunami threat and no immediate reports of damage.
