The man in his late 50s suffered fatal injuries after he was struck by a vehicle shortly before 2am this morning.
The motorway was closed in both directions between J3 and J4 but reopened northbound at around 8am. The southbound carriageway remains closed at this time.
Frankley services are also closed to users, as Highways England warned motorists to expect delays.
Police are appealing for any motorists travelling north or south on the M5 near to the service station to get in contact.
Inspector Russ Barker said: "The M5 is a central route for people travelling across the country and we're keen to speak to anyone who was on the stretch of the motorway between junction 3 and 4 near to Frankley Services early this morning."
The road remains closed while emergency services continue to deal with the incident, with diversions in place.
Any witnesses should contact West Mercia Police on 101 quoting reference 55s 031118.
The motorway is expected to remain closed until later this morning.
