Luxury living for millennials: Inside world’s biggest ‘co-living’ development in Canary Wharf – with a bar, cinema and spa – where tiny flats start at £1,300

The interior of the world’s biggest ‘co-living’ development in Canary Wharf which features a bar, cinema and spa -and ‘cosy’ flats start at £1,300 a month – has been revealed.  

Leases at The Collective’s new 21-storey project in Canary Wharf, central London, range from £1,300 per month for a year-long stay in a ‘cosy’ suite, up to £2,080 per month for a three-month stay in a ‘big’ living space.

The philosophy behind the 705-room building is ‘co-living’ – focusing on shared cooking, social and recreational spaces to encourage a sense of community among its young residents. 

It will feature one large communal kitchen on the first floor, but each apartment will also have a basic kitchenette.

The building’s 20th-floor swimming pool is claimed to be the highest in east London – located on the same floor as a bar, spa with sauna, gym, aerial silks studio and ‘mindfulness zone’. 

Other features of the living space include a virtual reality golf simulator and a venue for music events.  

Yoga, nutrition classes and mental health workshops are part of a cultural events programme, designed to encourage residents to socialise with each other. 

It is the second co-living programme launched by The Collective, who launched a project in Old Oak in 2016 – where roughly three quarters of residents are under 35.

The Canary Wharf project is set to open in July this year, with flexible leases from a single night up to 12 months.

The Collective website says: ‘Co-living is a way of living in cities that’s focused on community and convenience.

‘Live as part of a community, sharing wonderfully designed shared spaces and inspiring events, with the comfort of being able to retreat to your own fully furnished private space at the end of the day. 

‘Everything you need to make the most of city life is included in bill; rent, concierge, superfast internet, all utilities and taxes, room cleaning, exciting daily events and gym membership. So you can do the living, and leave the rest to us.’  

A spokesperson said: ‘The Collective Canary Wharf, which spans 21 storeys and where rooms start from £1,300 per month, now becomes the world’s largest co-living space, taking over from The Collective Old Oak in west London which opened in 2016. 

‘Designed by renowned global architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the development is fully tech-enabled.’

The company says its ‘bespoke mobile app’ will enable members to ‘truly shape their experience’.

The spokesperson continued: ‘Members will have the opportunity to meet, mingle, discuss and discover through The Collective’s wide-ranging cultural events programme. 

‘This features a regular programme dedicated to wellness – from yoga to sound baths, nutrition classes and reiki; live music showcasing the best of emerging London talent; mental health workshops; sensory cocktail making classes with Smith & Sinclair; and a dedicated cinema programme featuring cult classics, arthouse movies and beyond.’

The company boasts that the Canary Wharf co-living space is a ‘haven of creativity and community in the heart of the City’.    

A ‘cosy’ room in Canary Wharf costs £1320 per month with a 12-month stay, going up to £1720 a month for a three-month stay.

Canary Wharf’s ‘standard room’ is £1400pcm for 12 months and £1800 per month for a three-month contract.

The next size up, ‘comfy’, costs £1480 per month for 12 months and £1880 per month for three months.

The ‘big’ suite comes in at £1680 per month for 12 months, going up to £2080 per month for a three-month contract.  

The Collective’s founder and CEO, Reza Merchant, said: ‘The launch of The Collective Canary Wharf is a key pillar of The Collective’s ambitious global expansion plans – in the past 12 months the company has grown its global portfolio to a combined gross development value of £2.7 billion.
