‘Wayward’ sea lion weighing close to 600lbs is found meandering on a random Washington road MILES away from any body of water

Deputies in Washington state had a peculiar Sunday as they worked to transport a nearly 600lb sea lion back to a sizeable water source after the large mammal was spotted on a random road.
The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office shared in a release that the sea lion was found off Garlock Road, outside of Castle Rock, Washington, and roughly two miles from the closest water source.
Sergeant Corey Huffine appeared to be the first responding officer on the scene.

Deputies with the sheriff’s office were assisted by the Humane Society and Cowlitz County Public Works staff, who were on the scene for several hours.
They worked diligently to keep the sea lion at bay until the Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived with a trailer.

Authorities did check the sea lion’s health before releasing it back into the wild.
Becky Bennett with WDFW explained that officials checked over the large sea lion’s health.
‘While it isn’t uncommon for sea lions to be in the Cowlitz River this time of year with all the smelt, it was quickly determined this Steller sea lion, which are native to Washington, had taken several wrong turns,’ Bennett told CNN.
