LIRR service suspended after two people fatally struck by trains

Long Island Rail Road service was suspended early Monday after two people were fatally struck by separate non-passenger trains, according to the MTA.

Service was suspended between Jamaica and Penn Station after one person was hit near Woodside, while another individual was struck just east of the Hicksville station, the agency said.

Limited service was restored around 5:45 a.m. from Jamaica to Penn Station and eastbound service on the Ronkonkoma Branch was restored about 6 a.m.

Commuters were urged to use other branches. The subways are cross-honoring on the E train at Jamaica, Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, and Penn Station, as well as the 7 train at Woodside.

The LIRR tweeted about the Ronkonkoma incident that “based on past experience it can take up to 4 hours for service to be restored.”
