Japanese cars racing ahead of European rivals in second-hand reliability stakes

Japanese cars are racing ahead of European rivals in the second-hand reliability stakes.

A resounding seven in the top ten of used motors were made by Toyota, its sister firm Lexus and Honda, a mag survey found.

The Lexus IS Mk3 and the cheaper CT, were considered the most reliable by the poll of 80,000 car owners.

Other cars that won 92.72 per cent approval and above included Toyota’s RAV4 Mk4, Auris, Prius Mk3 and Honda’s CR-V Mk4.

The only non-Japanese cars in the top ten were from Volvo, Mercedes and Skoda. No British, Italian or French makes and models made the list.

Drivers were asked by Auto Express to rate reliability according to breakdowns throughout their ownership, which could stretch to several years.

At the other end of the scale the least reliable car was the German-owned Audi A4 Mk4 with just 82 per cent approval.

The list of shame also includes Vauxhall’s Zafira Mk2, Corsa Mk3 and Insignia Mk1 and two versions of the Nissan Qashqai.

The mag’s report said: “For those braving the classifieds and forecourts, reliability is the most important factor to take into account when thinking about a used car purchase.

“Despite being a used car, the model you buy will be new to you and the last thing you want is something that’s going to leave you stranded on the side of the road or with massive repair bills.”
