How Meghan breached royal protocol over a hat – but Queen didn’t seem to mind

Meghan Markle bonded with the Queen over her confusion about royal protocol on her first engagement with the monarch following her wedding.

The Duchess of Sussex travelled with the Queen to Chester for a day filled with engagements in June and the pair were pictured laughing and whispering together numerous times.

Royal fans have been wondering ever since how the former Suits actress bonded with the head of ‘The Firm’ after marrying Prince Harry.

However, it has now emerged that Meghan, who had officially joined the Royal family five weeks earlier, had turned up without a hat.

The Daily Mail reports the Queen’s aides had told she would be wearing a green hat as a mark of respect to those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire.

The Queen is said to have been "baffled" when Meghan turned up without a hat as she didn’t realise she was supposed to wear one too.

A senior aide said: "I don’t think the Duchess fully understood. This was not a request. Those are for others to make, not the Queen."

The Queen’s staff are said to have noted the Duchess’s mistake or "lack of deference".

There was another instance of confusion during the day’s events when Meghan didn’t know which of them was supposed to get into the limousine first.

The Queen told Meghan to go ahead of her, in a sweet gesture to Harry’ new bride.

However, Meghan is said to have bonded with the Queen over their shared love of dogs.
