A high school football player in Philadelphia has died after he collapsed during a scrimmage game with his team, family and officials said.
Ivan Hicks Jr., 16, a student at West Catholic Preparatory High School, fell unconscious around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday while taking a water break from a 7-on-7 practice game in Coatesville, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
“He was shy, but he was also very bubbly. Nice smile. He was very compassionate,” Ivan’s sister, Jelisa Smith, told news station Fox29.
School officials said that two parents with medical training rushed to Hicks’ aid before emergency crews arrived on the scene.
“Emergency service providers responded immediately and were on the scene within two minutes, joining with two of our parents who had medical training and had already begun performing CPR on the player,” Tomás Hanna, superintendent of the Coatesville Area School District, said in a statement.
He was rushed to Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville, where he was pronounced dead about an hour, later, the Chester County Coroner’s Office said.
The medical incident came as temperatures in the area reached highs of 88 on Tuesday.
No cause of death has been determined, but an autopsy was scheduled for Friday.
“We are committed to getting answers for Ivan’s family, friends, and community. His parents have been notified and our hearts go out to them,” Chester County Coroner Christina VandePol said in a statement, the newspaper reported.
“There was no sign of external injury in this tragic unexpected death. We will be looking closely at possible cardiac causes, given what is known about sudden death in young athletes, but it’s too early to draw any conclusions,” the coroner added.
