WASHINGTON — Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are calling for an investigation into violence against supporters of President Trump after the mayhem at the “Million MAGA March” in the nation’s capital last week.
In a letter to the committee’s Democratic chairwoman, New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, GOP lawmakers also slammed what they said was the “silence” from DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, saying it was part of a “broader pattern” of discrimination, Fox News reported on Thursday.
The streets around the White House were roiled by violence on Saturday as counter-protesters clashed with the president’s supporters, letting off fireworks where people were dining outside, stalking families as they tried to escape, and assaulting people wearing MAGA gear.
“We respectfully request a hearing on the violence directed at supporters of President Trump on Nov. 14, 2020,” GOP committee members Reps. James Comer (R-Ky.), Jody Hice (R-Ga.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas) wrote.
“These supporters were exercising their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble within the District of Columbia,” they added. “The failure of the city’s leaders to afford basic protections to persons who may hold different political viewpoints from their own appears to be another concerning example of viewpoint discrimination in the District.”
Tens of thousands of Trump supporters descended on Washington last weekend as he challenges the results of the 2020 election that found Joe Biden the winner and president-elect, claiming widespread fraud.
Police said people on both sides came from inside and outside the region “intent on clashing.”
The lawmakers accused Bowser of being silent after the violence against Trump supporters, saying it “suggests you apply these principles only for those who share your same political opinions.”
“This is a dangerous precedent,” they wrote.
