Girl, 7, trick-or-treating in bumblebee costume is shot in the chest by stray bullets in Chicago street – The Sun

A SEVEN-year-old girl dressed as a bumblebee was shot in the chest while trick-or-treating in Chicago on Thursday evening.

The girl was collecting candy in Little Village, on the Southwest Side, when at least one person in a group of at least three men began firing at around 5:30pm, reports claim.

A fire department spokesman said the unnamed girl was shot in the upper chest area and taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, while a man in his early 30s was also struck in the left hand.

A witness, Lali Lara, told the Chicago Tribune that the man began screaming, "My little girl's been shot!" – though it has been reported that the man and girl were not together.

Lara told the Tribune she rushed the little girl and her family inside the store, adding "Everybody was in shock.

“I was pressing on her and calling her name so she won’t close her eyes.

"She was looking at me, and I was calling her name.

"She was holding my hand for three minutes and then she let me go.

"I have kids — I would go crazy if something happened to my kids."

Police are reportedly investigating and there were no immediate arrests.

A police spokesman confirmed in a tweet that law enforcement believe the girl was not the intended target.

The incident comes two days after three people were fatally shot and nine people were injured in a shooting at a Halloween party in Long Beach, California.

Around 25 to 30 people had been at the party, police said.

As of Thursday evening, the shooter or shooters were still on the run.
