Former chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has purchased a luxury £3million chalet in the Swiss Alps, The Times has reported.

The three-storey property, situated in the upmarket ski resort of Verbier, Switzerland, sits a stones throw away from Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson’s lodge and comes with a large drink terrace.

The new purchase comes eight years after Mr Osborne came under fire for going on a ski holiday as he sought to balance the books and raise VAT to 20 per cent in what he called an ‘unavoidable budget’.

The famous ski resort, which attracts hundreds of avid skiers from across the globe, has also become a popular destination for the rich and famous wishing to build a holiday home in the Alpine village.

Among the notable names that have flown over to the icy resort are Barack Obama, Madonna, British adventurer Bear Grylls, singer James and former England rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio. 

Other famous names making an appearance at the expensive ski resort include superbike racer Carl Foggarty and musician Ed Sheeran. 

The chalet allows spectacular views of the picturesque Alpine village and covers 192.5 square metres

The property also comes with a large drink terrace and offers breathtaking views over the mountains

The three-storey property is situated in the Switzerland ski resort of Verbier and attracts avid skiers from across the globe

In 2015, the Prince Andrew and his former wife Sarah Ferguson also set their sights on the snowy landscape in the Switzerland resort to purchase an incredible £13million chalet. 

Verbier, which offers spectacular views of the summit of the Mont-Fort glacier and is the main resort of the ‘Four Valleys’ ski area, is a popular destination for those with cash to splash. 

It is also home to the classical music event, the Verbier Festival, and the Grand Raid Cristalp mountain biking competition. 

Since their arrival the Osborne’s have also become the talk of the town , with one local estate agent telling The Times: ‘We’ve had people coming into the shop saying, ”Have you heard about George!”’

 At 192.5 square metres, the stunning chalet also falls within Switzerland law which states foreign buyers must only buy one property which does not exceed 200 square metres. 

After leaving his post at Chancellor, Osborne has gone on to become editor of the Evening Standard is also adviser to the world’s largest investment firm, Blackrock.
