French fuel protester ‘threatens to detonate grenade at petrol station’

A man said to be a fuel protester has threatened to explode a grenade near a petrol station, according to reports.

Horrified witnesses saw the man wave the grenade in Angers, western France, and claimed he was carrying other explosives.

France’s Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the fuel protester demanded to see Emmanuel Macron.

Security officials rushed to the scene.

For more than a week, protesters clad in the fluorescent yellow jackets that all motorists in France must have in their cars have blocked roads across the country with burning barricades and convoys of slow-moving trucks, obstructing access to fuel depots, shopping centres and some factories.

It was not clear if the man was directly linked to the yellow jacket movement.

But the recent protests, largely orchestrated on social media and which aimed to prevent road access to some fuel depots and airports, have also drawn broader support from some voters dissatisfied with Macron’s economic reforms and his governing style.

Many protests happened on Saturday.

Sixteen people suffered minor injuries in other accidents across the country on Saturday.

One person run over by a car in northern France was in a critical state, according to the interior ministry, which estimated some 50,000 demonstrators were participating in the day’s demos.
