Founder of Rolling Stone magazine expected to cut all ties

The founder of Rolling Stone magazine, Jann Wenner, at the end of the year is expected to sever all ties with the magazine he founded in 1967.

Also expected to exit the music mag this year, sources said, is Wenner’s son, Gus Wenner, Rolling Stone’s chief operating officer and an adviser to the board of the publishing parent Penske Media.

Their impending departures have nothing to do with Penske’s merger Wednesday with MRC, sources say.

Rather, it has to do with the 2017 sale of Rolling Stone to Penske Media, which kept Jann, now 73, and his son on board as part of a deal that was expected to last three years.

Jann Wenner maintained a role in the mag after the sale as editorial director, but it was largely an honorary title.
