A five car motorway pile-up brought rush-hour traffic to a standstill this morning.

One of the vehicles was on fire after the collision on the M6 between Newton-le-Willows in Merseyside and Ashton-in-Makerfield in Greater Manchester.

Four cars and one van were involved in the smash on the southbound carriageway between junctions 23 and 22, which stopped all traffic on that section of the road.

Two lanes were also shut on the northbound carriageway – and drivers were advised to avoid the area if possible, with North West Motorway Police officers at the scene.

And a Highways England spokesman said: ‘Traffic has been stopped on the M6 southbound between J23 and J22 due to a vehicle fire and road traffic collision.’

Queues were stretching back from between junctions 23 and 22 to junction 26 for the M58, with traffic also heavy on the eastbound M58 for the M6 this morning.

Motorists in the North West also faced delays on the M6 in Cheshire today due to overrunning roadworks between junction 18 and 19 near Crewe and Northwich.

It follows two serious crashes on the M40 in the Thames Valley area this week – with three people dying on Monday after a car drove the wrong way down the road.

Running from Rugby to Gretna, the M6 is Britain’s longest motorway and carries more traffic than any other in the country over its whole length.

The 236-mile motorway also features the Preston Bypass, which was the UK’s first motorway and was later incorporated into the M6.
