A four-year-old girl found dangling by her neck from a six-storey window grille has been saved by firefighters and her neighbours in south-east China.

The girl was discovered by shocked residents, who later said the child was left home alone by her mother and slipped through the metal bars after she climbed onto the balcony.

A resident and a firefighter were seen desperately hanging onto the child as rescuers worked to free the girl. She was freed after being trapped for 30 minutes.

Video footage of the incident on Tuesday in Yangjiang city, Guangdong province shows the girl hanging in mid-air with her head wedged between the metal slats outside her home at about 11:30am. 

She was also seen grasping onto the grilles while swaying dangerously from side to side.

One of the residents, Mr Lin, who lives on the second floor, told Yangjiang TV Station that he and both his sons rushed to the fifth floor after hearing the girl crying.

Mr Lin said the girl’s mother also arrived home at the same time and was able to unlock the door.

The four-year-old was finally freed after being trapped for 30 minutes and was unhurt

The team of six firefighters on scene used a hydraulic shear to cut through the metal bars as officers and residents propped the little girl up with blankets to relieve pressure from her neck and arms.   

The girl was not injured during the scare, according to the report. 

It added that her mother had gone downstairs to pick up a parcel when her daughter started to look for her.

The girl had dropped her shoe on the balcony and was trying to retrieve it when she slipped through the window grilles.
