A family who went magnet fishing reeled in a bag full of guns and ammunition.

The arsenal was discovered wrapped in yellow hi-vis jacket in a black bag with rocks in it.

Mr Simrock, who has been fishing for two months now, was out with his wife Sarah Simcock 29, daughter Hayley, 9, and son Josh, 10, near the River Irwell, Salford.

The Stoke-on-Trent family stumbled across a pump action shotgun, two handguns and ammunition using a two-sided magnet.

Having never come across such a find like this before, the family handed the guns into the police straight away.

The part-time hairdresser and mum-of-three, Sarah said this was her first time out with her husband on a fishing trip and was amazed at the discovery.

She said: ‘We left from the Alexandra Park lake which is in the middle of Manchester itself.

‘We went further down and we found the canal and we discovered the gun underneath a big bridge.

‘My husband Douglas and my two children tend to go every weekend and have been doing it roughly now for about two months.

‘It was my first time on that weekend and we came across the guns, crazy really.

The bag contained ammunition, two handguns and a pump action shotgun covered in a hi vis jacket with rocks keeping the bag in the water

‘One of the guns was an all black pump action shotgun and that still had a shell casing inside it.

‘Another one which we are not sure on the make but was an all metal and black handgun type.

‘The final one was another handgun but it was long and it could’ve been a revolver.

‘There was three guns, ammunition and shotgun casing – it was wrapped up in a yellow hi-vis jacket with two big bricks inside the bag.’

It took Douglas 10 minutes to fish the munition out of the lake.

Mrs Simrock added: ‘We’ve not heard anything else about them because we don’t really want to know if they have been used or not.

Mr Simrock got into magnet fishing after seeing a footballer doing it on YouTube and his children joined his interest.

They have retrieved many pedal bikes, shopping trolleys and watering cans that are on the back of boats.

His three main magnets are: one that picks up 300kg in weight called a two-sides double magnet, one he uses picks up around 200kg in weight called a recovery magnet and 100kg in weight.
