The family of the Connecticut gymnast who died in a freak accident after slipping off uneven bars in practice said in on Monday that she’ll be “deeply missed by all those who crossed paths with her.”
The uncle of gymnast Melanie Coleman released the statement on behalf of the entire family, a day after Melanie died of a spinal-cord injury at Yale New Haven Hospital.
“She was a loving daughter, sister, cousin, teammate, and best friend,” the family said in the statement.
“We are confident that her spirit, laughter, and humor will live on through the ones who loved her most, as well as through the gift of life to those who needed it most through organ donation.”
Coleman, a nursing student at Southern Connecticut State University, was gravely hurt in what family friends described as a “tragic freak accident” while practicing Friday.
Coleman, who was named a Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association Scholastic All-American this year, was practicing on the uneven bars at the New Era Gymnastics facility in Hamden when she fell and suffered the injury.
“We are humbled by the outpouring support from our Milford community (our small town with a big heart) and beyond,” her family said in the statement.
“She will be sadly and deeply missed by all those who crossed paths with her.”
