Facebook down with users unable to access social network

Facebook is down for a number of users who are reporting issues with the social network.

While most social media users in the UK do not appear to have issues, there have been problems reported for others around the globe.

The site went down this afternoon affecting users from the United States and South America, to countries across Europe.

Both desktop and mobile sites have been hit by the blackout, with users unable to log in.

Those attempting to access the site are being shown a message saying: "Sorry, something went wrong.

"We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can."

Meanwhile mobile users are unable to refresh their News Feed.

A number of social media users have taken to Twitter to vent their opinions about the issue, using the hashtag #FacebookDown.

According to DownDetector, a website that tracks site downtime, hundreds of reports came in within minutes of the crash.

The majority (55 per cent) said they were experiencing a ‘total blackout’.

Meanwhile others have complained that they are unable to log in (35 per cent), while a smaller number (14 per cent) are having issues with images.

Those in New York appear to be among the hardest hit by the problem, as have those in eastern parts of the US.

Meanwhile reports of a blackout have also been experienced by those across South America, with the Sao Paulo part of Brazil worst affected.

Some social media users in the UK have also reported minor problems with the website today, however countries in the Eastern Hemisphere seen to have avoided the worst of it.

There has been no official word from Facebook on what is causing the problem or how long it will last.
