Essex 'plane crash' – Fire crews race to 'serious incident' amid reports of aircraft crash

Essex Police and local fire crews rushed to Belchamp Walter, which is on the Suffolk border, at noon today.

Eyewitnesses today told Essex Live they saw an aircraft "crash into the field".

One man, who wished the remain anonymous, said: "I saw an aircraft of some sort crash into the field. I’m not sure if it was a micro blade or a light aircraft.

"A helicopter did land in the field, there has been lots of police and services I’m sure they’ve got it in hand."

Another witness added: "We were driving back from Sudbury and saw fumes and smoke.

"We thought that’s a big bonfire. Then we heard about the crash."

The site, just three miles west of Sudbury, Suffolk, is close to a small private landing strip.

Fire crews from Bury St Edmunds, Long Melford and Clare are still at the scene.

Four fire engines from Essex County Fire and Rescue are also on the site.

Meanwhile, an air ambulance has been dispatched and several ambulances are in attendance.
